2014 Postgraduate Award winners

In 2011, the board of directors of Alpha Omega Alpha established the Postgraduate Award to encourage and support AΩA residents or fellows from programs or institutions with an active AΩA chapter or association to pursue a project in the spirit of the AΩA mission statement. Project applications were accepted in the categories of:

  1. Research: Support for clinical investigation, basic labora- tory research, epidemiology, or social science/health services research.
  2. Service: Local or international service work, focusing on underprivileged or immigrant populations or those in the developing world, as well as patient and population education projects.
  3. Teaching and education: Research, development, or implementation of education academic curricula, with the focus on postgraduate education.
  4. Leadership: Leadership development.
  5. Humanism and professionalism: Projects designed to encourage understanding, development, and retention of traits of humanism and professionalism among physicians, directed to physicians in postgraduate training.

Nine applicants received $2000 awards to support their work.

Abstract: The capacity to care for the critically ill has long been viewed asa fundamental element of established and comprehensive health care systems. Extending this capacity to health care systems in low- and middle-income countries is important given the burden of disease in these regions and the significance of critical care in overall health system strengthening. However, many practicalities of improving access and delivery of critical care in resource-limited settings have yet to be elucidated. We have initiated a program to build capacity for the care of critically ill patients in one low-income Southeast Asian country, Cambodia. Summary: Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is a life-saving procedure for patients with end-stage liver disease, but it is not universally available to the public due to a scarcity of donor organs. Cardiovascular disease is an increasing public health problem and is often responsible for severe complications following OLT. This project will benefit public health by assessing the impact of cardiovascular disease on outcomes after OLT and by determining risk predictors for poor outcomes in order to improve the clinical management of OLT recipients and maximize the benefit of scarce donor organs.
