Medical Student Service Project: Boonshoft Community Food Drive
On Saturday, April 16, 2011, medical students from the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine conducted their second annual Boonshoft Community Food Drive. Groups of students spent six hours traveling through neighborhoods in nearby Beavercreek, Fairborn, and Riverside to collect nonperishable food items to benefit food banks across the city whose shelves are traditionally dwindling at this time of year. The students worked primarily with Rosemary Dannin, Resource Development Coordinator at The Foodbank, to organize the drive. All told, nearly two tons of food were collected!
The success of this event would not have been possible without the generous support of many organizations. The Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society once again served an integral role of inspiration and support through their generous grant to underwrite all costs for the food drive. Additionally, the moving company Two Men and a Truck provided a truck and mover, as well as small packing boxes, to aid in collection for the second year in a row. Wright Copy provided all necessary printing services, and Select Signs created a beautiful event banner that will be used for years to come. Finally, local organizations such as Krogers, Mallard Landing, Wexford on the Greene, The Promenade, The Province, Ashton Brooke, Pepper Tree Villas, and the Wright State University Park were valued partners as remote drop off points for food throughout the community.
Student organizers John Corker, Andrew McBride, Natasha Mehta and Christine Wentworth-Eidsuane are looking forward to improving and expanding upon this event in the coming year.
