Recipient in 2000: Jenny Murase

Hormonal Effects on Psoriasis in Pregnant Women

This AOA fellowship, as well as a short-term NIH Research Fellowship, provided the funds Ms. Murase needed to begin a research project which she designed and managed during her four years of medical school. She was later awarded additional grants, totaling over $60,000, with awards from the General Clinical Research Center, the National Psoriasis Foundation, and Memorial Health Care Systems. Ms. Murase's study, involving 85 patients, was the first clinical trial to quantify how psoriasis changes in pregnancy and postpartum and to correlate the improvement or worsening of the disease with hormone levels. The objective was to better understand the hormone-induced down-regulation of the immune system in pregnancy which affects several other autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Ms. Murase won the General Clinical Research Center Medical Student Investigator Award in 2002, allowing her to graduate with distinction in clinical research, and the Meyskens Family Research Award in 2003. Her research won awards at the American College of Physicians and American Society of Internal Medicine regional competition in 2002 and national competition in 2003. She was also awarded the Starich Oral Presentation Award at the Western Student Medical Research Forum in 2003, and presented her research at both the International Investigative Dermatology Meeting and the International Psoriasis Symposium in 2003.
