AΩA is a leading advocate for scholarly attainment and moral purpose in medicine.

AΩA's mission statement:
Alpha Omega Alpha—dedicated to the belief that in the profession of medicine we will improve care for all patients by:

  • recognizing high educational achievement
  • honoring gifted teaching
  • encouraging the development of leaders in academia and the community
  • supporting the ideals of humanism and
  • promoting service to others.
  • AΩA has 132 Chapters in medical schools throughout the United States and has elected more than 183,000 members since its founding.

    More than fifty Nobel Prize winners in Physiology or Medicine, and in Chemistry, have been AΩA members. More than thirty of those were elected to AΩA prior to winning the Nobel Prize.

    Nearly seventy-five percent of deans of U.S. medical schools are members of AΩA.

    Eight AΩA members have served as NASA astronauts.

    Each year, AΩA grants more than $1.75 million to medical students, residents, fellows, mid-career physicians, and faculty for awards, projects, and prizes that recognize outstanding commitment and dedication to caring for others and providing high quality health care.
